The Potential Downside of Renting an Electric Car for Your Holiday

David Smallman, a 77-year-old resident of Hampshire, originally reserved a petrol car from Hertz’s Newcastle Airport branch. However, upon his arrival, he was informed that only electric vehicles (EVs) were available.

“Hertz has been my preferred car rental company for many years,” Smallman stated. “I informed them that this wasn’t what I had booked, but the manager claimed that there was no guarantee I would receive the car I had paid for and that the EV was the only option available.”

“Given my concerns about the need for frequent stops and charging the vehicle, I expressed my reluctance to accept the EV,” Smallman continued. “Unfortunately, I was left with no alternative, so I reluctantly agreed to take the electric car under protest.”

Despite this, Hertz did not provide him with a charging cable, limiting Smallman to charging points that already had cables connected.

“It was quite frustrating as I had to figure out where I could charge the vehicle,” Smallman explained. “To be fair, the car did have a built-in navigation system that displayed nearby charging stations and the remaining charge. However, Hertz did not supply me with a charging cable, so I couldn’t charge the car overnight at my hotel.”

“During our travels, we came across several charging stations, but since we didn’t have our own cable, we had to wait for the correct station to become available. The entire experience was incredibly inconvenient,” Smallman added.

It’s worth noting that Mr. Smallman is not the only one who has had such an experience.

Grant Simmons, a London resident currently residing in the United States, also encountered a similar situation with Hertz. “Hertz Heathrow provided me with an electric car despite not having made a reservation for one. I wasn’t prepared for it and had no prior experience using an electric vehicle,” he shared.

“Even though they gave me two charging cables, I didn’t know which one to use, and the charging stations had various speeds and connector types, making the process confusing. We managed to find a hotel that offered EV charging, but it turned out to be exorbitantly expensive,” Simmons recounted.

“The final leg of our trip took us from North Wales to Alton Towers, where no charging stations were available, and then to Southend to visit my parents. A journey that normally takes three hours took us ten hours due to the need for frequent recharging every 40 miles,” Simmons concluded.
