The Nun II Review: A Chilling and Captivating Film Analysis

Warner Bros. Philippines

The Conjuring Universe celebrates its 10th anniversary with a stunning achievement of raking in a whopping $2 billion worldwide at the box office across eight films. To mark this milestone, the highly anticipated sequel, “The Nun II,” brings back the terrifying Valak (Bonnie Aarons) and reintroduces Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) in her role as the visionary nun. This superior sequel offers bigger set-pieces, inventive jump scares, and powerful performances that the iconic movie monster truly deserves.

Set several years after the events in Saint Cartha, Romania, Sister Irene (Farmiga) is once again summoned by the Church to investigate a series of grisly murders across Europe. Joining her on this treacherous journey is Sister Debra (Storm Reid), a rebellious young nun from Mississippi. As they follow the trail of blood, they discover the signature of an old demonic foe. Their investigation leads them to a French boarding school where an old friend resides. Frenchie (Jonas Bloquet), who previously saved Sister Irene from the demon nun, has now become the vessel for Valak. Together, they must prevent Valak from retrieving a powerful relic.

What sets “The Nun II” apart from its predecessor is the engaging story crafted by Akela Cooper, one of the horror genre’s most talented writers. Cooper skillfully weaves substantial Catholic lore into the franchise, exploring the interplay between the sacred and the profane. This deepens the audience’s understanding of Valak without unnecessary exposition. The religious relic, instead of being a mere plot device, becomes a tool to enhance Valak’s legend.

Director Michael Chaves (“The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It”) and cinematographer Tristan Nyby further amplify the battle between good and evil in the film through stunning visuals that juxtapose religious iconography with demonic hauntings. One memorable shot depicts a halo-like light illuminating Valak’s menacing silhouette inside an abandoned chapel. However, “The Nun II” doesn’t rely solely on visuals; it also presents plenty of heart-pounding moments to terrify the audience, particularly in the climactic sequence set in the boarding school.

The success of the Conjuring Universe rests on the talented shoulders of the Farmiga sisters. Taissa leads “The Nun,” while her elder sister Vera anchors “The Conjuring” series. Both actresses deliver brilliant performances and exude confidence and determination, making them formidable counterparts to the monstrous creatures inhabiting their cinematic universe. “The Nun II” elevates Valak’s diabolical stature as the overarching antagonist she deserves to be, especially when pitted against the formidable Farmigas.
