The New York Times Reports on TikTok’s Introduction of Text-Based Posts

TikTok users can now express themselves through text-only content, marking a departure from the platform’s usual short video format.

This update follows recent changes in the social media landscape, such as Twitter’s rebranding as X and Meta’s launch of a text-based social media app called Threads.

TikTok officially announced the addition of text posts in a blog post on Monday night, although some users reported having access to this feature since June.

According to TikTok’s blog post, “With text posts, we’re expanding the boundaries of content creation for everyone on TikTok, giving the written creativity we’ve seen in comments, captions, and videos a dedicated space to shine.”

This new feature allows TikTok users to share text posts without the usual background visuals, such as videos and photos.

Previously, users could only add text to video and image posts, as well as captions and comments. Some users resorted to sharing screenshots of text-focused content from other social media apps or text conversations.

The text posts on TikTok can be customized with music, background colors, stickers, user tags, and hashtags. The maximum character limit for text posts is 1,000, while video descriptions are limited to 2,200 characters and comments to 150 characters.

Originally known for its visual and audio-driven content, TikTok gained immense popularity with short videos showcasing dance and skits.

With over one billion monthly users, including 150 million in the United States, TikTok remains a major social media platform despite facing restrictions in some regions due to security concerns.

The introduction of text posts on TikTok aligns with recent changes made by other prominent social media companies.

Elon Musk’s rebranding of Twitter as X, along with Meta’s launch of Threads as a competitor to Twitter, demonstrates the evolving landscape of social media.

Threads, a text-focused platform developed by Meta, garnered over 100 million sign-ups shortly after its debut, although its long-term success remains unknown.

These developments occur amidst significant changes within Twitter since Elon Musk’s acquisition of the platform last year.
