The New York Times Recommends Summer Reading Books

As I gaze upon the growing pile of books on my bedside table, in my library queue, and on my e-bookshelves filled with novels impulsively purchased and forgotten in one insomniac night, I realize my eyes are always bigger than my attention span. With the year’s midpoint approaching and my commitment to reading a book a week, I’m tempted to view reading as a chore rather than a joy. However, as The Times Book Review unveils its summer previews for fiction and nonfiction, offering even more enticing titles, I am determined to declare this summer as a reading summer. A season dedicated to reading books instead of just long magazine articles. I’ve already planned my itinerary, from Andrew Lipstein’s latest novel “The Vegan” to Aisha Harris’s “Wannabe: Reckonings With the Pop Culture That Shapes Me,” to satisfy both my craving for literature and nonfiction. With Lorrie Moore’s “I Am Homeless if This Is Not My Home” and Colson Whitehead’s “Crook Manifesto” among several other exciting releases, I am determined to tackle my growing stack of books and reading selections with enthusiasm and vigor.

On a different note, as the Supreme Court’s decision on Alabama’s election map leaves people in a divided state about voting rights, some like AL.com’s J.D. Crowe believe it to be a win for democracy. In contrast, Melissa Murray argues in The Washington Post that the court’s decision merely maintains the status quo, which has hobbled the law and protections for minority voters. In literature, there’s a new novel titled “My Murder,” where the reanimated victim of a serial killer comes back to life but finds life different than before. David Sedaris’s “Happy-Go-Lucky” also jokes about tough times and finds a place on the paperback nonfiction best-seller list.

As for what to watch out for, Novak Djokovic, playing for his 23rd Grand Slam singles title, faces off in the French Open final. President Biden will meet with NATO’s Secretary-General, Jens Stoltenberg, and Nima Momeni, who has been charged in the death of Cash App founder Bill Lee, is scheduled to appear in court. Lastly, King Charles III’s first birthday celebration as sovereign will be held, and Father’s Day will be celebrated in the US.

When it comes to cooking, this week’s menu has an array of unique recipes worth trying.
