The New Lady Tamaraws Coach Successfully Employs an Old System

The Lady Tamaraws of Far Eastern University (FEU) started their campaign in the V-League Collegiate Challenge with a straight-sets victory, sparking a celebration among the team. Despite the departure of their former coach Tina Salak, who migrated to the United States, the Lady Tamaraws continue to exhibit the same character and style of play that Salak introduced. Interim coach Manolo Refugia acknowledges that the Salak system is still in place and will remain unchanged as the team moves forward in the tournament. Refugia jokingly impersonates Salak during training sessions, creating a sense of familiarity and continuity for the players.

Salak, a prominent figure in the Far Eastern women’s volleyball program, stepped down after narrowly missing out on leading the Lady Tamaraws to the Final Four in the previous UAAP season. Her family’s application for migration was finally approved after a lengthy wait. Refugia aims to maintain the existing system while adding a few tweaks for better results. The team’s recent victory against the Mapua Lady Cardinals demonstrated the effectiveness of the system, with Tin Ubaldo providing solid leadership.

Ubaldo acknowledges that there is still room for improvement and excitement for what lies ahead. Refugia shares in the excitement, particularly in witnessing Ubaldo’s growth and development as a player. He believes that Ubaldo’s increasing confidence stems from her continuous learning and the assurance that she possesses the necessary skills to excel.

Far Eastern’s participation in the V-League serves as a platform to establish a solid and cohesive system, with each player playing their part and striving for continuous improvement. The team’s ultimate goal is to make a deeper run in the upcoming UAAP season.

In another match, the College of St. Benilde’s women’s volleyball team will showcase their core players who recently competed in the professional Premier Volleyball League (PVL). Gayle Pascual, Jade Gentapa, Michelle Gamit, Wielyn Estoque, and Cloanne Mondonedo gained valuable experience while playing for Farm Fresh in the PVL. As the defending NCAA champions, they aim to break the UAAP’s dominance in the league. Their first challenge comes against the Lady Pirates of Lyceum.
