The Negative Consequences of Prisons

Three former allies and members of former President Trump’s Cabinet appeared on Sunday news programs to express their dissatisfaction. First, Bill Barr, the former Attorney General, used “extraordinary language” to describe his ex-boss on CBS’ Face the Nation, according to the New York Times. Barr accused Trump of “reckless conduct” in the Mar-a-Lago classified documents case and referred to him as a “consummate narcissist” and a “fundamentally flawed person.” He even compared Trump’s behavior to that of a defiant 9-year-old. Barr concluded by stating that “Our country can’t be a therapy session for a troubled man like this.”

While Barr criticized Trump’s defense of holding on to classified materials as “absurd,” he also expressed reservations about the idea of a former president serving time in prison. Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie also compared Trump to a petulant child and highlighted how Trump turned against officials who initially received praise from him. Christie made these remarks on CNN’s State of the Union.

Christie stated, “If you believe what he said when they left, that means he didn’t pick the very best people and doesn’t know how to pick personnel.” He emphasized that if one were to believe Trump’s initial claims about picking the best people, then Trump would be the worst manager in the history of the American presidency. Additionally, former Defense Secretary Mark Esper voiced his concerns about Trump’s handling of classified documents, describing it as “unauthorized, illegal, and dangerous.” Esper outlined the potential risks to national security that mishandling such information could pose.

Esper, who was fired by Trump shortly after the 2020 election, was asked if he thought the former president could be trusted with national secrets again if reelected. Esper responded by saying, “Based on his actions, again, if proven true under the indictment by the special counsel, no.” He emphasized that having such documents floating around would be irresponsible and jeopardize the safety of service members and national security. In response to these on-air criticisms, Trump’s spokesman, Steven Cheung, referred to the individuals as “morons” and accused them of protecting a corrupt and politicized system of justice.
