The creator of the viral “Grimace Shake” trend on TikTok, where individuals pretend to faint or fall after drinking McDonald’s purple shake, has shared the story behind the meme.

The “Grimace Shake” trend started when McDonald’s launched the Grimace Birthday Meal to celebrate the 52nd birthday of their purple mascot, Grimace. As of July 17th, the #GrimaceShake hashtag has amassed over 2.6 billion views on TikTok.

On July 13th, McDonald’s social media director Guillaume Huin addressed questions about the trend in a LinkedIn post, clarifying that McDonald’s did not initiate it.

Austin Frazier, known as @thefrazmaz on TikTok, independently started the trend with a video on June 14th. In the video, Frazier enthusiastically introduces the Grimace shake, takes a sip, and then appears to fall to the ground.

The trend quickly gained popularity, with people imitating Frazier’s actions or adding their own twist to it. Frazier later explained that he was inspired by a video featuring Burger King’s Spider-Verse Whopper, which showed someone taking a bite and then being hospitalized.

Frazier’s intention was to create a humorous meme with the unexpected color of the Grimace shake symbolizing its supposed harmful effects. He emphasized that it was all done in good fun, aiming to evoke quick, funny laughs from viewers.

Frazier’s original TikTok video received millions of views, and he subsequently posted an explanatory video to address the questions and confusion surrounding the trend. The additional video garnered 12 million views.

Since starting the trend, Frazier’s TikTok following has grown from around 80 to over 49,000 followers.

Frazier expressed his hope to be recognized for more varied content beyond the “Grimace guy” persona.

McDonald’s posted a tweet allegedly from Grimace on July 6th, implying the end of the trend. The company has not confirmed whether the Grimace shake will return for Grimace’s 53rd birthday next year.
