Kema Christian-Coates had a childhood filled with the presence of “holiday men,” fathers who were absent most of the year but returned around Christmas only to disappear again. Her own father’s absence left a void in her life and a lingering fear that she, like her mother and grandmother, would never find a reliable partner.
