Andi, co-founded by Hoover and tech entrepreneur Jed White in September 2021, raised $2.5 million through Y Combinator, the renowned Silicon Valley startup incubator formerly led by OpenAI founder Sam Altman. Andi aims to reimagine search as a friendly and helpful personal AI assistant. Hoover envisions a future where Andi can go beyond traditional search and enable users to book an Uber, reserve a table at a restaurant, or place an order on Instacart. While these fledgling startups work towards reshaping search, the dominant player in the field, Google, faces the challenge of adapting to the rapidly changing industry. Google, caught off guard by the overwhelming popularity of ChatGPT, reportedly sounded an internal alarm and committed to infusing AI into all its products. The company is now racing to develop a brand-new AI-powered search engine, while simultaneously updating the current version of Google Search with AI capabilities. Despite Google’s formidable presence, its younger competitors believe that their smaller size gives them an edge in the battle to redefine online search. Neeva’s Ramaswamy emphasized the advantage of being more agile and capable of faster development cycles, while Andi’s Hoover boldly claimed, “Google is the last company in the world that’s going to reimagine search. They’re entrenched in bureaucracy.” As the landscape of search engines undergoes a seismic shift, startups like Neeva and Andi, along with other players like You.com and Perplexity AI, are leveraging the mainstream AI explosion to revolutionize how we search for information online.
