The Importance of Reading for Critical Cognitive Processes: An Opinion

As an retired reading specialist and current literacy educator and consultant, I have observed with increasing concern the decline in reading interest, reading skills, and reading comprehension over time. Alyssa Rosenberg accurately highlighted the importance of restoring the joy in reading, and achieving this goal will require a collaborative effort from parents, guardians, and teachers [“Captain Underpants vs. Roblox: How to get kids reading again,” op-ed, July 27].

Neuroscientists present compelling reasons to promote reading, particularly reading for pleasure, as a means to counter the addictive allure and dependence on digital media. Recent studies reveal that reading print-based material facilitates the development of cognitive processes such as imagination, reflection, empathy, and critical thinking. On the contrary, information derived from technological sources like virtual games or social media encourages rapid consumption, hindering the cultivation of crucial cognitive skills.

The prospect of future reading being reduced to brief moments of humorous videos, bullet-pointed lists, and quick tips is quite alarming. If studies continue to demonstrate a lack of empathy development, for instance, it raises concerns about the future of our nation and the world at large.

I urge fellow individuals who share these apprehensions to volunteer their time to read to school groups or become literacy mentors. Effecting change will require a collective and dedicated effort.
