The Impending Union Strike in Las Vegas: Potential Shutdown Looms

Tens of thousands of Las Vegas hospitality workers have voted to authorize a strike that could impact over three dozen casinos and hotels. The Culinary Workers Union, Nevada’s largest labor union representing about 60,000 hospitality workers statewide, is fighting for new union contracts that include better pay, benefits, and working conditions. This marks the first potential strike for the union in over thirty years. The main casino employers on the Las Vegas Strip, including MGM Resorts International, Caesars Entertainment, and Wynn Resorts, are currently in negotiations with the union.

Contracts for 40,000 members of the Culinary Union recently expired and thousands of housekeepers, cocktail and food servers, porters, cooks, bartenders, and other hotel employees in Las Vegas were eligible to vote in the strike authorization. Deanna Virgil, a longtime employee at Wynn Las Vegas, expressed her support for the strike, stating, “We are the glue that keeps these hotels together, and we should be paid what we deserve.” The union is scheduled to resume bargaining with MGM Resorts, Caesars, and Wynn Resorts next week.

MGM Resorts, responding to the strike authorization, expressed confidence in reaching a mutually beneficial agreement with the union. Caesars and Wynn Resorts did not provide comments. Despite being able to manage with her current salary and benefits by living with her adult daughter, Virgil emphasized the importance of fair compensation, stating, “There are a lot of us who have two jobs, but one job should be enough.”

According to Bethany Khan, the union’s representative, all members receive health insurance and earn approximately $26 hourly, including benefits. The exact pay raise sought by the union was not disclosed, but they have indicated it is the largest wage increase ever requested in their history. The Culinary Union has a history of strikes, with one lasting over six years in the 1990s. In 2018, a strike authorization vote also took place, resulting in five-year contracts being reached after negotiations. (Read more labor strike stories.)
