The Impact of Electric Car Adoption: Overlooking Older Drivers, Women, and Low-Income Motorists

Electric Car Transition Leaves Older Drivers, Women, and Low-Income Motorists Behind

Industry chiefs warn that the rush to adopt electric vehicles (EVs) will leave older drivers, women, and low-income motorists at a disadvantage.

Experts highlight these three groups as being the most vulnerable in the transition, which is exacerbated by the increasing cost of EVs. This puts pressure on the government to provide additional support for those wishing to switch.

An inquiry launched by the House of Lords’ environment and climate change committee examines EVs and the feasibility of the government’s ban on new petrol and diesel car sales by 2030.

During the committee’s initial session, it was revealed that EV insurance costs have risen by up to 60% this year. Additionally, on-street charging points are up to 20% more expensive than traditional fuel due to increased electricity costs.

The goal of having six high-speed chargers at every motorway service station by 2024 is likely to be missed, according to the committee.

A survey conducted by the AutoTrader car sales website found that 56% of drivers consider EVs too expensive, and only 47% believe they would fit their lifestyle.

This setback adds to the challenges facing the government’s 2030 target.

Mike Hawes, CEO of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, urged for better incentives to help private motorists afford EVs. He highlighted the significant increase in insurance costs and asked for measures to make it more affordable.

Compared to petrol or diesel vehicles, EVs can be as much as £10,000 more expensive. Additionally, there are currently only nine EV models available for less than £30,000, down from 11 in late 2022. In contrast, there are 87 diesel and petrol models selling for under £30,000.
