The Hollywood Dual Strike: Unveiling the Turmoil Beyond Writers and Actors

Not long after the Writers Guild of America’s strike began in May, Eugene Ramos started walking the picket lines twice a week. Ramos, an animation writer, dons sunglasses and a baseball cap as his “war” gear to combat the LA sunshine. While not a member of unions negotiating new contracts with major studios, Ramos is fighting for his future and hopes that the strike will bring attention to the concerns of animation writers. Many workers in the entertainment industry feel they are unrepresented or belong to organizations that can’t address their needs. The Animation Guild, for instance, represents workers in various areas beyond writers, and some projects have no union oversight at all. Additionally, support staff and documentary filmmakers lack dedicated unions exclusively representing their interests. While some workers have joined the strike, others are conflicted as the strike stretches on, destabilizing job opportunities. The strike has also inspired movements across Hollywood, with Marvel’s visual-effects artists voting to unionize and unscripted talent pushing for collective bargaining units. Despite the challenges, there is hope for change as the strike brings attention to long-standing issues and encourages solidarity among industry professionals.
