The History-Making Tony Awards

Broadway’s most highly anticipated theatre festival, the Tony Awards, recently made history in its 73rd edition. Amidst the Hollywood writers’ strike, the event proved that the show must go on. Kimberly Akimbo, a poignant musical exploring a teenager’s life with a rare genetic disorder, won the evening’s top honor, beating out more highly publicized contenders. The musical featured music by Jeanine Tesori and a book by David Lindsay-Abaire and starred the incredibly talented Victoria Clark.

However, the night’s biggest stars were nonbinary actors J. Harrison Ghee and Alex Newell, who made history by becoming the first nonbinary performers to win Tony Awards for acting. Last year, Toby Marlow, the writer and composer of Six, became the first nonbinary Tony winner. Ghee won the leading actor in a musical award for his performance in Some Like It Hot, while Newell won the prize for best featured actor in a musical for their role as Lulu in Shucked.

The show’s host, Ariana DeBose, opened the evening with an electric performance, replacing the usual upbeat and chummy tone with a captivating energy. With the writers’ strike leaving the show without a script, DeBose shared that the only script prompting would be the words, “Please wrap up.” Despite this, the actors displayed their solidarity with the striking writers by wearing pins on the red carpet and mentioning them at the podium.

Overall, the Tony Awards demonstrated that even during a writer’s strike, Broadway’s creative spirit cannot be dampened. The night’s historic moments and exceptional performances showcased the immense talent present in the theatre industry.
