The Growing Popularity of Grayscale Cars: Exploring the Fascination with Gray Vehicles

ISeeCars.com has just released its latest survey on the most popular car colors in the market. The study analyzed the sales of over 10 million used cars aged 1 to 5 years. As expected, grayscale paints (white, black, gray, and silver) remain the top choices. In fact, these non-colors have gained 1.7% of the market in the past five years, currently accounting for 78.9% of total sales. Among them, white is the most popular and has experienced significant growth, almost reaching the popularity of gray which saw a 4% increase. This growth for gray may partly be attributed to a decline in the popularity of silver, which dropped by 3.4%.

Surprisingly, the most popular actual color is blue, with a 1.2% increase, surpassing red.

Below is a list of the most popular colors, the percentage of sales they represent, and their trends:

  1. White, 26.2% (+2.9% in the past five years)
  2. Black, 21.8% (-1.8%)
  3. Gray, 19.2% (+4%)
  4. Silver, 11.7% (-3,4%)
  5. Blue, 9.7% (+1.2%)
  6. Red, 8.2% (-2.4%)
  7. Green, 1.0% (+0.2%)
  8. Brown, 0.8% (-0.9%)
  9. Orange, 0.6% (+0.3%)
  10. Beige, 0.4% (+0.1%)
  11. Purple, 0.2% (+0.1%)
  12. Gold, 0.2% (-0.1%)
  13. Yellow, 0.1% (-0.1%)

Aside from the color analysis, the ISeeCars.com study also provides interesting insights. The states with the highest number of non-grayscale car sales are Alaska, West Virginia, and Vermont. Conversely, Hawaii, California, and Louisiana favor more vibrant colors. The organization speculates that the high number of rental and fleet sales in the latter states contribute to the prevalence of conservative colors. In these states, white is also the most popular color, which could be attributed to the high temperatures and abundant sunlight (white reflects more light).

Although they may not be the most popular, real colors can actually add value to a car. According to ISeeCars.com, cars in yellow have the highest average prices, followed by green and beige. White and black also hold high average prices due to their scarcity in the market. Interestingly, beige has seen the biggest price increase compared to five years ago, which the organization attributes to overall car price inflation and the availability of high-end pickup trucks in that color.
