‘The Flash’ by Warner Bros. experiences a major box office setback with a steep 72% decline

Warner Bros. seems to be facing some challenges with its latest superhero film, “The Flash.” Despite debuting in theaters on June 16, the movie’s performance has been disappointing, potentially costing the studio a significant amount. In its second week, “The Flash” experienced a dramatic drop at the box office, only earning $15.2 million after a lackluster $55 million opening. These numbers are far from impressive, considering the film’s hefty $200 million production budget. We have reached out to Warner Bros. for comment on this matter.

On the flip side, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” reclaimed the top spot at the box office in its fourth week of release. This success propelled the Sony film to reach $317.1 million domestically and an impressive $560.3 million worldwide. The animated sequel even surpassed “Elemental,” which held the second-place position for the second consecutive week, with an estimated $18.5 million. Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for Comscore, praised the film’s exceptional achievement, saying, “For a film like this to crawl and spin a web back into the No. 1 spot is very rare. It’s a testament to the quality of the movie. This is a highly competitive and crowded summer movie market, yet ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ has emerged as one of the biggest movies this summer season.”

Despite its struggles, DC has two upcoming projects in the pipeline. “Blue Beetle” is scheduled to release on August 18, and Jason Momoa will return as “Aquaman” in “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” on December 20. However, some attribute “The Flash’s” difficulties to Ezra Miller’s off-screen behavior, which includes arrests and misconduct. The actor has since apologized and sought mental health treatment. Miller, who portrays Barry Allen in the film, has encountered multiple legal issues in recent years. He pleaded not guilty in October 2022 to stealing liquor from a neighbor’s home in Vermont and was arrested twice in Hawaii for disorderly conduct and harassment at a karaoke bar. Following Miller’s troubles, there were concerns regarding his projects with Warner Bros. and DC. Rolling Stone reported that an emergency meeting was held by the production companies to address the situation. As a result, all projects involving Miller and any public appearances scheduled to support the DC Cinematic Universe were put on hold. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
