The former commanders of Nato are openly expressing their belief that it is in America’s best interest for Britain to remain in the European Union, but they are asking the British people to disregard their own interests and democratic future. They also underestimate the EU’s potential to destabilize Europe by creating an EU army and pursuing expansionist aims. Therefore, I see no compelling reason for Britain to stay in the EU, and the security it offers is far from convincing.

The former commanders claim that they have had ample opportunity to recognize the crucial importance of British leadership in the EU, but they have reached the wrong conclusions. They fail to understand that Britain is forced to comply with the EU’s demands. It is a mistake to confuse military partnerships with the EU’s draining of our resources to support other EU countries.

As we approach the 72nd anniversary of the D-Day landings, I had the privilege of discussing this historic event with a friend who was there. We also discussed the EU referendum, and he explained that his decision to vote leave is based on the fact that he and his comrades fought for freedom and sovereignty. His visit to the polling station will be a tribute to their sacrifice and an effort to reclaim what they fought for.
It is a betrayal by our leaders that Angela Merkel threatens us with economic consequences if we leave the EU. Germany’s dominance in Europe, solely due to its economic success, is reminiscent of past events. I wonder what those who fought for Britain would think of a German Chancellor trying to intimidate us into her way of thinking.
As someone who was only two years old during the last referendum, I am excited to stand with my 92-year-old friend on June 23rd and put an end to this shameful and illogical surrender of sovereignty.
