The economic recession may not be the most treacherous one

While discussions on our country’s inflation and economic recession dominate television, radio, and social media, there is one recession that deserves more attention – a recession of military recruitment.

The consequences of our Armed Forces failing to meet their recruiting objectives could be far more severe than the current economic situation. Lt. Gen. Caroline Miller, deputy chief of staff for manpower, personnel, and services, stated during a testimony that the Air Force is projected to fall short of its active duty recruiting goals by approximately 4,100 recruits in fiscal year 2023.

This is the first time since 1999 that the active-duty recruitment projections have been missed.

THE IMPACT OF MILITARY RECRUITMENT CRISIS ON YOUNG ADULTS

The Army fell short of its recruiting goal by 15,000 recruits in 2022 while the Navy also failed to meet their benchmarks for active duty and Reserve officer recruitment. Gen. David Berger, the Marine Corps commandant, expressed his concerns about recruiting talented young Americans in a competitive economy and a society that is growing distant from the military.

His concerns are valid.

There are several factors contributing to this decline in recruitment. Issues such as pay rates, physical eligibility, politicization, and woke policies that hinder readiness and retention have driven away potential recruits. A recent poll revealed that only 38% of Americans consider patriotism important. This certainly affects our military recruitment efforts.

As a retired Marine, a member of Congress, and a grandfather, I can see the alarming consequences of this trend.

USING AI TO SOLVE THE MILITARY’S RECRUITING CRISIS

At a time when countries like Iran, China, and Russia are growing bolder, the declining number of individuals willing to defend our Constitution, our values, and our land is a concerning issue. There is a noticeable correlation between the decline in recruitment and the politicization and DEI-focused “leadership” at the Pentagon.

Aside from the natural risks associated with military service, telling our servicemen and women that they are inherently racist and divided does not inspire unity in the face of adversity.

It is essential to understand that our military personnel are not subjects of a social experiment. Their objective is not to support someone’s ideological beliefs on gender, race, or any other contentious issue of the moment. Their objective is to be prepared and strong in dangerous situations. Nothing more, nothing less.

If this decline continues, resulting in a smaller and less capable defense, our enemies will take notice. They already have. Without a change in priorities for our military leadership, away from social justice experiments and climate change rhetoric, and back to readiness and effectiveness, our national security will be in jeopardy.
