The Determination of EV Range and its Flawed Process: Explained

Electric vehicle range is a highly anticipated metric in the automotive industry, determining the distance an EV can travel on a single charge.

However, there are potential flaws in the official government testing and certification process for these ranges.

While the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been testing vehicles since 1971, they only started testing EVs in 2012. Given that EV technology is still relatively new and rapidly evolving, EPA engineers describe the current state as both exciting and akin to the “wild west.”

It’s important to note that the EPA only tests a small portion of the overall vehicle fleet. Nevertheless, automakers are required to meet EPA standards if their vehicles undergo testing at any time.

Although some believe that the EPA ratings are more accurate than those from other governmental bodies, particularly for American roads, independent groups have discovered discrepancies between their own test results and the official EPA range ratings.

Critics argue that the EPA’s labels are inconsistent with those for gas vehicles due to the failure to account for real-world driving conditions. The range figures on labels may appear inflated, and automakers have been known to use methods that exaggerate their range numbers.
