The Beginning of the Jon Gruden-Roger Goodell Rivalry: Tracing Back to a Controversial ‘MNF’ Call

In December 2011, Jon Gruden, former head coach and current Monday Night Football broadcaster, found himself in a heated disagreement with NFL officials regarding the officiating of a play between the Atlanta linebacker Curtis Lofton and New Orleans receiver Marques Colston. Gruden expressed his frustration during a national TV broadcast, questioning the consistency of the game’s officiating. This caught the attention of NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, who called Gruden to discuss the importance of player safety.

Gruden, who had already developed a dislike for the NFL office prior to Goodell’s tenure, felt that he was being treated unfairly. He believed that Goodell saw him as someone who lacked coaching experience and knowledge of football. This tension between Gruden and Goodell was further compounded by various incidents over the years.

One such incident occurred in 2020 when the Raiders, under Gruden’s leadership, were fined $500,000 and Gruden personally faced a $150,000 fine for COVID-19 violations. Additionally, the team lost a sixth-round draft pick as a consequence. However, the most significant source of frustration for Gruden was the email leak scandal that ultimately led to his resignation as head coach of the Raiders in October 2021.

During an investigation into toxic workplace culture within the Washington Commanders organization, it was revealed that an estimated 650,000 emails, including a controversial exchange between Gruden and Washington’s general manager Bruce Allen, had been collected by owner Dan Snyder’s legal team. Gruden and other sources within the league believe that Goodell and Snyder were involved in leaking the emails to protect Snyder and undermine Gruden.

Gruden, reflecting on his situation, questioned why he had become a target. He believed that his personal feelings towards Goodell, and his perception of Goodell’s power, played a role in the leak. Gruden felt that he was being manipulated and controlled by Goodell, leading to a sense of frustration and a deep-rooted disdain for the commissioner.
