The Art of Home: Explore the Luxurious World of Interior Design with Designer Sara Story’s Debut Book

Sara Story has released a new book called “The Art of Home” (Rizzoli), which beautifully showcases her global-boho aesthetic through the homes she has decorated in New York, Colorado, Texas, and California. These homes include three out of four residences she shares with her husband, hedge-fund founder Kenneth Garschina, and their children.

These residences are situated in Manhattan, Snedens Landing, NY, and Texas, and the family also owns a place in Paris.

According to Story, all of the homes featured in the book are elevated by their amazing views and art collections. Story, who grew up in Asia and Houston, comes from an artistic background; her father was involved in the oil business, and her mother was a museum curator.

One particular standout property is the couple’s Gramercy Park five-story brownstone, as highlighted in a feature on Architectural Digest. The couple originally purchased a small 500-square-foot studio in the building and now owns nine out of the ten units in the 1849 Italianate building (with one garden-level unit being the only exception).

Story describes the brownstone as a “craft project” and compares it to a Wes Anderson film. She mentions that the house has a lot of character and has been put together lovingly, with all its unique creaks and imperfections. It’s not a renovated townhouse with a perfect finish, but instead, a more eclectic and interesting approach.

This perfectly captures the essence of Story’s unique style and her ability to bring her clients’ visions to life. For example, she mentions working with a retired financier in Austin, Texas, who wanted a design that combined elements of an opium den, Lenny Kravitz’s style, and the aesthetic of “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” Story also mentions that while everything has come together organically for the Gramercy Park home, she feels there is still more to be done to complete the puzzle.

Perhaps that will be the focus of her next book.
