Encouraging Independence with a Sandwich Bar

Sandwiches have always been a lunchtime favorite. However, preparing a variety of sandwiches in advance can be time-consuming, especially considering everyone’s different preferences. Some like mayo, while others prefer a combination of mayo and mustard, and one of my kids even enjoys relish. Furthermore, the younger ones often request peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

While there are instances where it’s necessary to stick to a set meal, my family has discovered the value of granting our kids some autonomy when it comes to breakfast and lunch at home. That’s why we introduced a sandwich bar once a week, providing them with the opportunity to assemble their own meals.

The options available at our sandwich bar vary based on what’s on sale or needs to be consumed. For example, if we have extra eggs in the fridge, I’ll prepare egg salad. Typically, we offer a variety of bread, tortillas, tuna, peanut butter, jelly, honey, lunch meat (or leftover shredded meat), cheese, relish, mayo, mustard, and pickles. We also include options like fruit, salads, crackers, nuts, and occasionally even chips.

When the sandwich bar is ready, our kids take turns assembling their meals, starting from the youngest to the oldest. If anyone would like their sandwich heated up, we have a pan ready on the stove, and I am always there to assist if needed. They can also choose a side or two and grab a glass of water to complete their meal.
