The 2026 men’s soccer World Cup will be the first to be held in three countries—the US, Canada, and Mexico—but 2030 will go a step further with games in three continents. FIFA, the governing body for world soccer, announced on Wednesday that Spain, Portugal, and Morocco will host the tournament, while the opening three games will take place in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay, as reported by the Guardian. It is interesting to note that the first-ever World Cup was held in Uruguay in 1930. FIFA plans to hold a ceremony in the capital, Montevideo, to commemorate the centenary.
With the Asian and Oceanian continental federations set to bid for hosting rights in 2034, Saudi Arabia wasted no time and submitted their bid shortly after FIFA’s announcement, according to Politico. Australia is also expected to submit a bid, and it is speculated that Indonesia and China might join the competition as well.
The decision to have six countries co-host the tournament has faced criticism from environmental groups due to the increased air travel involved. The Fan Supporters Europe (FSE) group also expressed their concerns, as reported by the AP. In a statement, FSE said, “FIFA continues its cycle of destruction against the greatest tournament on earth. Horrendous for supporters, disregards the environment, and rolls the red carpet out to a host for 2034 with an appalling human rights record.” (Read more World Cup stories.)
