If you happen to come across someone these days who still carries a flip phone, chances are they are either a member of AARP or attempting to embrace a retro lifestyle. However, Michael Cera, the 35-year-old actor known for his role in Arrested Development and set to star in the upcoming Greta Gerwig-directed Barbie film, is neither. According to CNN, Cera is proof that “sometimes stars aren’t just like us.” He reveals to People magazine that during filming, some of his co-stars, including Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, and Issa Rae, were part of a group chat, but he couldn’t join in because he doesn’t own any type of modern communication device.
“I don’t have an iPhone myself,” Cera confesses. “I have a flip phone.” In a previous interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Cera admitted that not having a smartphone is a deliberate choice due to his fear of losing control over his waking life. He recalls his aversion to smartphones starting with the introduction of the BlackBerry, when a friend who had one ignored him during lunch, leaving Cera feeling lonely and bored as he typed out emails on his own device.
Despite missing out on the Barbie group chat, Cera is not overly concerned, as he believes it aligns with his character in the film. He tells People, “[Gerwig’s] gift to me when I arrived was a picture disc of ‘N Sync’s No Strings Attached, which somehow felt like a real guiding light in my character’s backstory.” The highly anticipated Barbie movie will be released on July 21.
