In a regrettable incident at Bangkok’s Don Mueang Airport, a movable walkway trapped a 57-year-old Thai passenger’s leg, resulting in the amputation of her leg above the knee. The incident occurred as she was preparing to board a flight to Nakhon Si Thammarat province. The airport’s officials have expressed their condolences and are determined to ensure that such accidents do not happen again.
The Don Mueang Airport Director, Karun Thanakuljeerapat, stated during a news conference that the airport will bear all the woman’s medical costs and is open to negotiations regarding compensations. Initially, the medical team at the hospital where she was taken informed Karun that reattaching her leg was not possible. However, the woman requested to be transferred to another hospital for further assessment.
Images shared online depicted the woman’s leg trapped beneath the belt of the walkway, with airport staff providing assistance. A nearby suitcase was missing two wheels, and the comb-like plates covering the edge of the walkway were broken. Although the relationship between the suitcase and the accident is unclear, Karun mentioned that the walkways are regularly inspected to prevent such incidents.
The airport director mentioned that the walkway, manufactured by Hitachi in 1996, will be replaced with a newer model in 2025. In a previous incident in Terminal 1, a passenger’s shoe was damaged due to a faulty walkway. The airport promptly repaired the walkway and reopened it within an hour.
