Texas Man Receives Sentence for Making Threats Towards Poll Workers and Officials

A Texas man from Lubbock, Frederick Francis Goltz, has been sentenced to 3 1/2 years in federal prison for advocating a mass shooting of poll workers and threatening two Arizona officials and their children. This sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge James Wesley Hendrix, who also ordered three years of supervised release following the prison term.

The proliferation of threats against elections officials has become a significant issue in the United States, particularly after former President Donald Trump falsely claimed that the 2020 election was stolen from him. These threats have led to an exodus of election officials across the country and have made it challenging to recruit poll workers.

Just this week, Trump was indicted on felony charges for his involvement in working to overturn the results of the 2020 election, which ultimately led to the violent U.S. Capitol riot by his supporters.

Court documents revealed that Goltz used far-right social media platforms to threaten several individuals, including a lawyer with the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office and a Maricopa County elections official.

Maricopa County, which includes Phoenix, became a target of Trump supporters after President Joe Biden won Arizona by more than 10,000 votes, with Maricopa County playing a crucial role in his victory. However, a Republican-backed review of the election in the county failed to produce any evidence to support Trump’s baseless claims of a stolen election.

In his plea papers, Goltz admitted to posting the lawyer’s personal information on social media and threatening their children. He also made similar threats against other officials and their families.

The FBI investigation into Goltz’s activities revealed a pattern of making threatening statements against various individuals. In November 2022, he even advocated for a mass shooting of poll workers and election officials in precincts he deemed to have “suspect” results.
