Tesla’s Bold Move: Introducing New Steering System for Model 3 Sparks Controversy

When it comes to gadgets, even small tweaks can have a big impact. Sometimes, these changes can have a negative effect that companies fail to acknowledge.

In 2017, Apple made waves by eliminating the physical touch button on the iPhone in the name of minimalism.

Now, Tesla, known for making gadgets with wheels, has taken a similar approach by removing the turn signal and shifter stalks (a.k.a. stick) from the steering column of the Model 3 “Highland.”

However, not everyone is thrilled with this decision.

Long discussions on Reddit (also referred to as blowback) reveal the significance of the signal stick that has become second nature to drivers.

Opinions on this change vary widely. Some consider it unnecessary and think it complicates simple actions. Others believe Tesla is motivated solely by cost reduction rather than improving convenience. Some even argue that this move poses problems for navigating roundabouts (also known as rotaries) without a stalk.

However, as explained by this Youtuber (see video below), Tesla’s decision is part of a broader design philosophy aimed at minimalism and cleaner aesthetics. (Note: In 2021, Tesla also eliminated the turn signal and shifter stalks on the higher-end, lower-volume Model S and X. However, this change did not create the same level of controversy as the Model 3, which is a high-volume, mass-market sedan.)

Tesla’s Ambitious Design Goals

“Automakers are looking to cut costs, and they’ve proven they’re willing to sacrifice some usability to do so,” said Will Kaufman, news editor at Edmunds, via email. Kaufman believes that this may be a challenging sell for Tesla.

“While this change aligns with Tesla’s minimalist ethos, it ultimately stems from their strong focus on cost reduction,” Kaufman explained.

According to Kaufman, this decision could exacerbate an existing issue.

“Placing an important function like turn signals on a moving target, as the steering wheel turns but the stalk does not, could worsen the problem. Many drivers already struggle with using their turn signals effectively, so this change may make matters even worse,” he added.

Goodbye to the Shifter

The shifter is another control that drivers instinctively reach for due to muscle memory developed over decades.

“This poses a particular challenge for Tesla, as going stalkless not only eliminates the shifter but also integrates it into the touchscreen, creating new issues in the event of touchscreen failure,” Kaufman noted.

Of course, Tesla faced similar blowback when they introduced a single display in the Model 3. However, owners eventually adapted, and it is now considered a unique “feature” of the Model 3 and Model Y.

Only time will tell if Tesla’s design philosophy will prevail and if consumers will wholeheartedly embrace their minimalistic approach.
