Tesla Required to Address Issues with 50,000 Self-Driving Vehicles

Tesla is currently facing the task of fixing over 50,000 cars in the United States due to a flaw in its self-driving software that caused some vehicles to pass stop signs. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration stated that Tesla will address this issue by providing a free software update via the internet.

As more Tesla vehicles hit the roads and more drivers gain access to its experimental driverless features, concerns about the safety of its Full Self-Driving and Autopilot features have increased. The safety body revealed that vehicles equipped with the Full Self-Driving software, including Model S, X, 3, and Y, failed to come to a complete stop at stop signs. However, in many parts of the US, cars are legally required to fully stop at these signs.

Tesla offers the self-driving software, which costs $10,000 or £6,800 when purchasing a car, in a “beta” form to US drivers. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration warned that “rolling stop” functionality, available as part of the Full Self-Driving (Beta) software, could lead to vehicles traveling through all-way stop intersections without coming to a stop. This feature allows cars to drive through junctions at speeds up to 5.6 miles per hour.

Despite the flaw, Tesla is not aware of any accidents resulting from this issue, according to the regulator. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has made several promises regarding the company’s progress in developing driverless car software but has frequently faced challenges from regulators.

Tesla is currently being investigated for multiple instances in which its less advanced Autopilot software was involved in accidents with emergency vehicles. In response to pressure, the company recently implemented a restriction preventing passengers in the front seats from playing video games while the car is in motion.

Tesla has not provided any comment on the matter.
