Tesla Model 3 vs. Model Y: Exploring the Widening Price Gap – Is the Cybertruck Responsible?

Tesla has adjusted the pricing for its Model Y and Model 3 vehicles, presenting buyers in the U.S. with new options for electric vehicles (EVs).

Previously, the Model Y (non-inventory) was available for under $50K. However, the starting price for orders has now increased to over $50K. Alternatively, customers can purchase new inventory Model Ys in Los Angeles for a starting price of over $48K.

A Twitter user noted the price change when Tesla removed the least expensive Model Y variant from its U.S. website.

There is speculation that this change is due to the allocation of the 4680 battery cells, which were being used in the lower-priced Model Y variant, to the upcoming Cybertruck model. This suggests that Tesla is preparing to ramp up production of the Cybertruck in the near future.

The new 4680 battery, which offers higher energy density, is considered a key technology for the upcoming Cybertruck, as previously reported.

Meanwhile, the prices of new inventory Model 3s are gradually decreasing. A rear-wheel drive (RWD) Model 3 now starts at $36,220 in Los Angeles (as of September 18), with the possibility of dropping below $36K.

These price reductions are likely in anticipation of the upcoming “Highland” release of the Model 3 in the U.S.

“The new improvements with Model 3 go beyond a cosmetic refresh – it’s more of a heavy update without being a full redesign. The new Model 3 has added features, new materials, updated look, and better performance (slightly improved range),” said Brian Moody, executive editor for Kelley Blue Book, in an email.

In California, customers who qualify for the full federal tax credit and state rebate can effectively lower the price to $21,220.

Currently, the refreshed Model 3 is not available for order in the U.S., but it can be ordered in other markets such as Australia, Japan, and Germany.
