Tesla Becomes UK Sales Leader as Petrol-Powered Cars Dip Below 50%

In a remarkable shift, petrol cars accounted for less than 50% of total sales last month, as Tesla, the electric car giant, emerged as the best-selling brand in the UK.

Data from transport researchers New AutoMotive reveals that new electric cars comprised just over a quarter of the total vehicles sold in December, while the market share of petrol cars dipped to 46%. This surge in electric car sales can be attributed to falling prices and regulations promoting environmentally friendly transportation.

Interestingly, electric cars have witnessed significant growth in the UK, rising from less than 3% of new sales two years ago to 26% last month.

December turned out to be Tesla’s best-ever month for UK sales, with the company capturing 9% of the market. This placed Tesla ahead of other manufacturers, with VW at 8% and Audi at 7%.

Notably, Tesla’s cars accounted for 36% of all new electric car purchases in December.

Last month, the market share of electric vehicles reached its second-highest level ever at 26%, just below the record 33% achieved in April 2020 when car purchases hit their lowest level since 1946. Tesla’s Model 3 became the most popular new car in the UK during that period.

In December, the Texas-based electric car company sold nearly 9,300 cars, marking a over two-thirds increase compared to the previous year.

In a separate report, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) highlighted that the number of registered electric vehicles in 2021 surpassed the combined total of the previous five years, despite an overall sluggish year for new car sales, which only experienced a 1% growth.

According to SMMT, battery electric vehicles accounted for just under 12% of the overall market last year.

The data from New AutoMotive indicates that five years ago, petrol and diesel cars were equally popular, with petrol having a 49% market share and diesel at 47% in December 2016.
