‘Teri Hatcher Criticized by ‘Desperate Housewives’ Writer, Alleges Staff Disregarded Her’

Wisteria Lane, known for its drama, pales in comparison to the behind-the-scenes turmoil of the hit series “Desperate Housewives.” Patty Lin, a writer for the show’s eight-season run, claims that the writers were not encouraged to interact with the cast, and she personally experienced “overt racism” from creator Marc Cherry. According to Lin’s memoir titled “End Credits: How I Broke Up with Hollywood,” released this week, the writers were hardly welcomed on set, only encountering the cast during table reads where they would quietly sit in the back, avoiding eye contact with Teri Hatcher.

Starring Felicity Huffman, Eva Longoria, Marcia Cross, Nicolette Sheridan, and Hatcher, “Desperate Housewives” captivated audiences from 2004 to 2012 and received multiple Emmy Awards. However, Cherry’s letter in support of Huffman during her sentencing for the college admissions scandal hinted at tension with another unnamed actress on the show.

Lin also criticizes Cherry’s leadership, describing it as wildly inefficient. She claims that she and some staff were given mundane tasks of writing mediocre material while Cherry reserved the most important lines for his favorite writers. This led to what Lin calls “schlock,” which she finds perplexing considering the show’s success and accolades.

In addition to inefficiency, Lin accuses Cherry of making inappropriate comments. She states that he once suggested she create a show similar to Margaret Cho’s “All-American Girl” during a lunch conversation. Lin took offense, stating that she should not be grouped with Cho simply because they are both Asian women.

Before her time on “Desperate Housewives,” Lin wrote for other popular shows like “Friends,” “Freaks and Geeks,” and “Breaking Bad.” However, the negative experiences ultimately led her to leave the industry.

As of now, there has been no comment from Cherry or Hatcher’s representatives regarding Lin’s claims.
