“Tenderness” Exhibit: Photographer JL Javier Explores Masculinity through an Ode to Softness

Photographer JL Javier challenges traditional ideas of masculinity through his exhibition titled Tenderness by inviting subjects to explore vulnerability through the act of undressing. The exhibition, displayed at the Everything’s Fine bookstore in Salcedo, Makati, aims to redefine our understanding of softness in relation to masculinity. With bright spotlights and overhead lighting illuminating the monochromatic collection, the photos captivate viewers and draw attention to the intricate details. Javier envisioned the exhibition as a bright space that envelops the viewer in a wall of images, both big and small.

The collection features individuals of different shapes and sizes captured in various stages of undress. In the exhibition text, director Apa Agbayani poses thought-provoking questions, such as how far one should allow someone to see into their vulnerability and what it truly means to be seen. Originally named Try a Little Tenderness, inspired by Otis Redding’s song, the exhibit serves as an exploration of the meaning of tenderness for Agbayani and Javier.

The Tenderness project was conceived in 2019 when Javier and Agbayani joined forces to bring their vision to life. During the photo sessions, subjects were asked to remove layers of clothing, revealing their vulnerability as each layer came off. Since then, the project has undergone various forms and edits. It remained dormant until November 2021 when excerpts were exhibited by FotoMoto PH. Months later, in June 2022, Tarzeer Pictures published a small edit of the work as an online exhibition. When Javier revisited the project in 2022, he approached the editing process with fresh eyes and a newfound appreciation, resulting in a complete transformation of the collection. The collaboration between Javier and Agbayani had also evolved, leading to a different perspective on the work.

The exhibition at Everything’s Fine was made possible through their assistance in publishing the latest reprint of the photobook, which was released alongside the exhibit on July 7, 2023. Javier carefully selected images from the book that had not been previously showcased in other iterations of Tenderness. Each photograph portrays subjects in various states of undress and emotion. Some exhibit spontaneous laughter, while others hide their faces. As Agbayani writes in the foreword, the act of undressing allowed subjects to share their intimate stories, ranging from distant memories to fresh sorrows.

One remarkable aspect of the Tenderness collection is the diverse representation of body sizes. The photographs capture the intricate details of each subject’s body. Whether it is the patterns of body hair, the protruding ribs, or the presence of scars and stretch marks, the images invite viewers to delve deeper into these complexities. By closely examining the details, viewers can connect with the vulnerability depicted in the collection. As Agbayani states in the zine, a person’s body is a map waiting to be explored, leading to a deeper understanding of their experiences.

The act of undressing is inherently vulnerable, and Tenderness encourages viewers to confront their comfort levels when confronted with such vulnerability. By allowing oneself to truly see the collection, viewers gain a profound appreciation for the details that make up the subjects’ stories. From the scars on their bodies to the captivating play of light on their backs, these details evoke the emotions and themes that Javier and Agbayani aim to convey in Tenderness. As Agbayani asks, if these photos represent how far the subjects allow us to see, are we open to allowing ourselves to truly engage with their stories?

You can experience the Tenderness exhibition at Prince Tower, Tordesillas St., Salcedo Village, Makati until July 29, 2023. Limited copies of the photobook’s latest reprint can be found at Everything’s Fine.
