June 14 (UPI) — Microsoft’s plans to acquire video game developer, Activision Blizzard, for $69 billion have been temporarily halted following a decision by a U.S. federal judge in favor of the Federal Trade Commission’s antitrust complaint against the deal.
The acquisition raised concern from the FTC that Microsoft’s exclusive access to Activision titles may disadvantage competitors Nintendo and Sony. The Judge, Edward Davila, granted the FTC’s request to block the merger until the court rules on the preliminary injunction request.
The evidentiary hearing on the preliminary injunction is set for June 22 and 23.
Microsoft and Activision are expected to present their argument against the ruling.
Microsoft Vice Chairman and President, Brad Smith, said that the decision would “accelerate the decision-making process” and maintains confidence in their case.
