Former Council Chair denies allegations of abuse

Honolulu’s former City Council member, Ikaika Anderson, has recently pleaded not guilty to allegations of domestic abuse made by his girlfriend. Anderson, along with his attorney Thomas Otake, entered the not guilty plea on a charge of misdemeanor abuse of a family or household member on Tuesday. Otake confidently declared Anderson’s innocence and urged the public to allow the court process to continue without judgment. The Honolulu police reported that Anderson’s girlfriend initially informed a co-worker of a domestic violence situation, who then reported it to the Hawaii Police Department. After the police located her, she accused Anderson of physically abusing her, causing visible injuries and arm pain. Anderson was subsequently arrested, charged with abuse of a family or household member, and released on $1,000 bail.

Anderson’s accuser has faced a similar charge herself, accused of assaulting her then-husband in 2020, but the case was eventually dismissed without prejudice. Her ex-husband had also successfully obtained a temporary restraining order against her in 2020, which he dropped in an attempt to reconcile, and the couple divorced in June 2022.

After serving on the Honolulu City Council for 11 years, Anderson unsuccessfully ran for lieutenant governor in 2022. He was later appointed to be the director of the state Department of Hawaiian Home Lands by Gov. Josh Green in which the Senate Committee on Hawaiian Affairs voted 4-1 not to recommend his confirmation and Anderson subsequently withdrew his nomination.

In conclusion, the allegations against Anderson are being addressed in the court process, and it is essential to allow the legal system to take its course before reaching any conclusions concerning the matter.
