The 2023 winners of the Duck Tape Stuck at Prom Scholarship Contest were recently announced, each receiving a $10,000 scholarship prize for the best dress and best tux categories. Among the 10 finalists is Karla Tejeda from Los Angeles, California, who shared her experience of the “very challenging” process of creating her dress with Fox News Digital. Tejeda had never made a dress before and was surprised by how she could achieve such a remarkable result using Duck Tape. Her stunning pink-and-white French-inspired gown took 120 hours to complete and required over 14 rolls of Duck Tape. Despite having just a week to create the gown, Tejeda triumphed through trial and error, showcasing intricate designs and relying on the support of her family and friends. Ian Rojas, another finalist from Taylorsville, Utah, spent over 57 hours fashioning his unique suit using 11 rolls of Duck Tape. Rojas drew inspiration from his ancestors in El Salvador, particularly the Aztecs and Mayans, fusing their cultural heritage with the formality of prom wear. Rojas also expressed his overwhelming joy upon winning the scholarship prize, which he is considering using for a mentorship program in Italy. The Stuck at Prom Scholarship Contest, initiated in 2001, aims to recognize teenagers’ creativity and craftsmanship in constructing prom outfits from Duck Tape. With over 8,000 students participating and more than half a million dollars in scholarship money awarded thus far, the contest continues to inspire and support young talent.
