Teenage Southampton Midfielder Romeo Lavia Set to Earn Liverpool Over €45m with Bid

Liverpool is focusing its transfer efforts on 19-year-old Romeo Lavia to fill the void left by Jordan Henderson and Fabinho, who recently accepted offers from Saudi Arabia. The club’s initial offer of £34m (€40m) for Lavia, with an additional £4m (€4.7m) based on appearances, was rejected. However, a new offer worth over €45m, including add-ons, has been made.

Liverpool’s need for another defensive midfielder is evident, but entrusting such responsibility to a young player at such a high price carries some risk. Nevertheless, Liverpool sees Lavia as a potential star for the next decade, although they believe his current valuation of £50m (€58m) does not adequately reflect his experience.

Southampton can exploit the widespread interest in Lavia, as Chelsea considers him an alternative if their pursuit of Moises Caicedo from Brighton continues to be fruitless. Although Lavia prefers a move to Anfield, Southampton may receive a higher bid from Stamford Bridge.

Jurgen Klopp, currently on Liverpool’s pre-season trip to Singapore, recognizes the urgency in finding a suitable replacement for Fabinho. He stated, “We know that we have to do something there. It is absolutely clear. We are working on solutions, I think everyone can imagine that.”

Liverpool experienced significant defensive issues throughout last season, which were only resolved towards the end. Klopp attributes this to structural issues rather than individual performances, as the forwards and midfielders were not pressing and counter-pressing as effectively as in previous seasons. This left Fabinho exposed and subject to criticism. The midfield was restructured and Trent Alexander-Arnold’s hybrid role provided more energy and dynamism, resulting in an improvement.

Klopp indicated that the age of the new number six should not be a concern if the team functions properly. He commented, “If we defend well with all the other midfielders, plus the three up front, plus the last line, probably at times I could play the No 6, then there’s not much to do anymore.”

In other news, Bayern Munich’s pursuit of Harry Kane is at a deadlock in negotiations with Tottenham. The Bundesliga giants are willing to break their transfer record to sign the England captain but are still far from agreeing on a fee, with a significant gap of at least £20m (€23.3m).

Furthermore, Bayern has lost offensive firepower as Sadio Mane becomes the latest player to join the Saudi Pro League with a move to Al-Nassr. Mane, the 31-year-old Senegal forward, spent only one season in Germany after leaving Liverpool last summer, and he departs for a reported €40m.
