Teen in South Carolina catches catfish for the first time, discovers an ‘exceptionally rare’ catch

A teenager from South Carolina had a surprising fishing experience when he decided to try his luck at catching catfish for the first time. Logan Overholt, a 13-year-old from Abbeyville, was spending time with his grandparents while his family was away in Georgia for a baseball tournament. Taking advantage of the opportunity, Logan went fishing in the lake near his grandparents’ house.

On July 7, as a storm approached Lake Russell near Blue Hole, Logan was joined by his two sisters and his grandparents, who were excited to witness his first-ever catfish catch. To his delight, Logan successfully reeled in a midsize catfish on his first try using bluegill as bait. However, his next catch was far from ordinary. He hooked an albino catfish, but at the time, he didn’t realize just how rare it was.

Albino catfish are extremely uncommon compared to the general catfish population in lakes and rivers, according to William Wood, a fisheries biologist from the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. These unique fish require both parents to possess a specific set of genes to produce an albino offspring. Additionally, their white coloring does not provide camouflage, making them easily visible to predators. This lack of camouflage also makes it harder for albino catfish to hunt for prey, resulting in slower growth rates and decreased chances of survival.

The storm intensified, with lightning flashing, forcing Logan to end his fishing day prematurely. Once back in the car with his family, he began researching his catch and discovered its rarity. Regretting his decision not to keep the fish, he wishes he had preserved it for display. Logan’s passion for fishing extends beyond this memorable catch; he enjoys watching fishing videos online to expand his knowledge and identification skills.

Although the albino catfish was released back into Lake Russell, Logan hopes for the opportunity to catch it once again. He documented the experience on his YouTube channel, loganrocksoutdoors. Fishing has been a beloved activity for Logan since his father introduced him to it at the age of five. In fact, he expressed that if Abbeyville had a fishing team and he had a boat, he would choose fishing over baseball. Logan’s dream of encountering the albino catfish for a second time remains a possibility.
