Theodore “Ted” Kaczynski, a Harvard-educated mathematician who gained notoriety as the “Unabomber” following a 17-year bombing campaign that left three people dead and 23 others injured, passed away at the age of 81. A spokesperson for the federal Bureau of Prisons, Kristie Breshears, confirmed that Kaczynski died on Saturday at the federal prison medical center in Butner, North Carolina. His cause of death is not yet known. Kaczynski had been held at the federal Supermax prison in Florence, Colorado, since May 1998, after being sentenced to four life sentences plus 30 years for his reign of terror that targeted universities and set the nation on edge. Kaczynski admitted to 16 bombings between 1978 and 1995, with several of his victims suffering permanent maiming. The Unabomber’s homemade bombs changed the way Americans mailed packages and boarded airplanes, leading to a virtual shutdown of air travel on the West Coast in July 1995. His downfall came after he penned a 35,000-word manifesto called “Industrial Society and Its Future,” which was published by The Washington Post and The New York Times. Kaczynski’s brother and brother’s wife spotted the manifesto’s tone and alerted the FBI, leading to the Unabomber’s arrest in 1996. Despite being hailed by some as a romantic anti-hero, the hermit was later revealed as a vengeful loner whose delusions included hating modern society and being maltreated by his own family members.
