Christopher Nolan has embraced a traditional approach to his work, eschewing smartphones, email, and internet connectivity while writing scripts on a computer without internet access.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, alongside the cast of “Oppenheimer” including Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, and Matt Damon, Nolan discussed his resistance to adopting modern technologies.
Describing his children’s view of him as a “Luddite”, Nolan clarified that he appreciates technology but prefers a more detached approach.
“If I’m generating my material and writing my own scripts, being on a smartphone all day wouldn’t be very useful for me,” Nolan explained.
This preference extends to the delivery of his scripts to the actors as well, as Nolan prefers personal interaction over electronic communication. As a result, he flew to Ireland to personally hand-deliver the script to Cillian Murphy.
Nolan emphasized the importance of privacy in his creative process, allowing for experimentation and the exchange of ideas with his actors in a face-to-face setting.
This is not the first time Nolan has expressed his aversion to modern technology. He revealed in a previous interview with People magazine in December 2020 that he carries a simple flip phone to avoid being constantly connected to the internet. Additionally, The New York Times reported in October 2014 that Nolan does not have an email address and prefers to receive important messages in physical form.
