Taylor Swift’s Impactful Post Spurs Skyrocketing Voter Registration Numbers Nationwide

On National Voter Registration Day in the U.S., Taylor Swift implored her vast fanbase to Speak Now and make their democratic voices heard. This call to action resulted in a surge of traffic to Vote.org, a non-profit organization dedicated to voter registration. Vote.org reported a record-breaking number of sign-ups, attributing the increase to Swift’s support. On her Instagram story, Swift asked her followers if they had registered to vote for the upcoming 2024 U.S. elections. Within an hour of her post, traffic to the Vote.org website skyrocketed by 1226%, as stated by Vote.org CEO Andrea Hailey. Hailey referred to the website’s increased activity as something Swift would be proud of. By the end of the day, 35,252 individuals had registered to vote through the site, marking a 22.5% improvement compared to the previous year’s campaign. According to Vote.org, this year’s National Voter Registration Day was the most successful since 2020, a year dominated by a highly contentious election between Joe Biden and Donald Trump.

The surge in voter registrations was driven in part by increased interest from young people, with an impressive 115% rise in 18-year-old registrants compared to last year. Hailey noted that young people consistently demonstrate their passion for their rights and access to the voting process. In a tweet, Hailey shared an astonishing fact: there was an 849% increase in registrations compared to the previous year. This generation’s enthusiasm for participating in the democratic process stands to be a game changer, shaping the outcomes of future elections.

Vote.org plans to leverage this momentum to register eight million voters before the 2024 elections. They have launched various registration programs, including youth outreach, influencer engagement, and digital and social media campaigns. Swift, who was previously hesitant to discuss political matters in public, changed course in 2018 when she publicly supported Democratic candidate Phil Bredesen for the Tennessee Senate, while critiquing his Republican opponent Marsha Blackburn for her stance on LGBTQ2+ and women’s rights. In 2020, Swift endorsed Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, expressing her belief that America had an opportunity to heal under their leadership.

By amplifying voter voices, Swift has played a crucial role in influencing registration numbers, as evidenced by the impressive surge on National Voter Registration Day. Vote.org expresses gratitude to Swift and highlights their collective achievements of over 35,000 registrations, 50,000 verifications, a 115% increase in 18-year-old registrants, and over 1.3 million webpage views. Together, they aim to make democracy shine.
