Canadian Taylor Swift fans can rejoice as the popular U.S. singer-songwriter has announced six new shows in Toronto as part of her Eras Tour. Swift will be performing at the Rogers Centre from November 14 to 16, 2024, and then again from November 21 to 23, 2024. In a tweet, Swift wrote, “Turns out it’s NOT the end of an era. Miami, New Orleans, Indy, and Toronto: The Eras Tour is coming to you in 2024 with @gracieabrams!” Fans can currently register online on Ticketmaster’s website to secure seats for all six shows, although tickets are not yet on sale.
The announcement comes after Swift initially left Canada out of her 14 new tour dates release last month, leading to disappointment among Canadians, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Trudeau responded to her July announcement with a Twitter message, referencing some of Swift’s songs and expressing the hope to see her in Canada soon. The perceived snub even reached the House of Commons, with a Conservative MP stating that he would file an “official grievance within Parliament on behalf of all Swifties” in the country.
The Eras Tour began in the United States in March and has already seen sell-out shows, with fans in Seattle causing a 2.3-magnitude earthquake last month. The cause of the seismic activity has yet to be determined, but it could be attributed to soundwaves, jumping fans, or a combination of factors. Swift’s decision to only perform in Toronto makes her the first artist to have six nights at the Rogers Centre stadium as part of a single tour.
Eric Alper, a music industry expert in Toronto, explained that touring Canada is challenging due to the country’s vast landmass and relatively smaller population. Compared to the U.S. and the U.K., Canada lacks large venues that can accommodate over 50,000 people. The ongoing $300 million renovation of Rogers Centre, which has reduced its seating capacity to 41,500, excluding floor seats and standing room, is also noteworthy.
According to economist Moshe Lander from Concordia University, mega tours like Swift’s have economic impacts on the cities they visit. In the case of a Taylor Swift concert, the economic benefits would come from the influx of tourist dollars. Swift is scheduled to perform in Mexico, Europe, Asia, and Australia over the next year. Canadian fans have demonstrated their willingness to travel to see her, as border crossings in British Columbia were extremely busy last month ahead of her Seattle concerts, which coincided with a Blue Jays-Mariners series.
The Eras Tour is currently set to conclude in Toronto on November 23, 2024, unless additional shows are added.
