Taylor Swift Gains Recognition in College Literary Circles

Ghent University in Belgium is offering an innovative course called “Literature (Taylor’s Version),” inspired by the songs of Taylor Swift, according to the Guardian. Dr. Elly McCausland, the professor teaching the class, has received numerous requests to join from both students and non-students worldwide. The course will not only explore Swift’s lyrics but also dive into the works of renowned authors like Chaucer, Shakespeare, Sylvia Plath, Charlotte Bronte, and Margaret Atwood, drawing parallels between their literature and Swift’s music.

The class syllabus states, “Highly prolific and autobiographical in her songwriting, Swift makes frequent allusions to canonical literary texts in her music.” It goes on to mention that the course will explore topics such as literary feminism, ecocriticism, fan studies, and tropes like the anti-hero using Swift’s work as a starting point. Dr. McCausland, who also runs the “Swifterature” blog, was inspired to create the class after listening to Swift’s album, Midnights, as she noticed parallels between Swift’s usage of historical events as metaphors and the works of Sylvia Plath. The Los Angeles Times also reports that Stanford will offer a student-led class on Swift in the spring. (Read more Taylor Swift stories.)
