Taking Action on Moral Choices: What Should We Do?

When we find ourselves paddling our boat against strong winds, the temptation is to give up and go with the flow. Similarly, when the values we hold dear do not align with the dominant forces in society, we may be tempted to stop fighting. This is the current struggle faced by well-intentioned Christians who have fought for truth and goodness in previous elections.

However, genuine discernment should lead to decisive choices and actions. If our reflections are truly the result of prayer, they should propel us into action. There are credible forces raising serious questions about the integrity of last year’s national elections, alleging that they were rigged. Yet, the Commission on Elections refuses to acknowledge these concerns.

So, what should we do? Inflation is soaring, making basic commodities unaffordable, wages remain stagnant, and there is no government plan to alleviate the situation.

What should we do? Former senator Leila de Lima has been unjustly imprisoned for six years, despite what seems to be fabricated charges and the retraction of key prosecution witnesses.

What should we do? The government has cut ties with the International Criminal Court, disregarding their decision. Meanwhile, the victims of the drug war continue to wait for justice.

What should we do? The Philippines ranks poorly in a survey on students’ academic skills, with no evident government plan to improve our education system, other than implementing mandatory Reserve Officers’ Training Corps and limiting teachers’ creativity in the classroom.

What should we do? Despite our military being intimidated in the West Philippine Sea, the government shows no decisive political or diplomatic action to defend our sovereignty.

What should we do? The Maharlika Investment Fund has been enacted into law, despite concerns from business leaders and lawmakers about its dangerous provisions and loopholes. Should we simply wait for the inevitable consequences?

What should we do? The offices of the President and Vice President have requested significant amounts of “confidential funds” from our country’s coffers without any requirement to account for them.

These issues, among many others, require our resolute Christian response. Now is not the time for passive inaction, even if we face fierce opposition. Life has been devalued and trivialized through the killings carried out in the name of the previous administration’s war on drugs. Just this month, police violence claimed the lives of two young individuals: Jerhode “Jemboy” Baltazar (Navotas, Aug. 2) and John Francis Ompad (Rodriguez, Rizal, Aug. 20). A few days prior, a retired police officer was captured on video brandishing his gun at an innocent civilian. What do we call a country where law enforcers themselves have become perpetrators of violence and lawlessness?

What should we do? The time for action is now!
