Sylvester Stallone’s ‘Expendables’ Injuries: Unveiling the Unresolved Impact on His Life

  • Sylvester Stallone reveals that his injuries from the set of “The Expendables” still affect him
  • He suffered a broken neck during the filming of the 2010 movie and underwent surgery
  • In the Netflix documentary “Sly,” Stallone says he never fully recovered from the injury

In the newly released Netflix documentary “Sly,” Sylvester Stallone reflects on his illustrious 50-year Hollywood career.

While Stallone is famous for his iconic roles in “Rocky” (1976), “Rambo: First Blood” (1982), and their respective franchises, he launched another successful action franchise in 2010 with “The Expendables,” which he directed and co-wrote.

Stallone reveals that he sustained his most serious and long-term injuries during the filming of “The Expendables” and continues to experience the effects today.

Performing his own stunts, Stallone broke his neck at the age of 62 while shooting a fight scene with wrestling star “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, resulting in the need for a metal plate and surgery for a hairline fracture.

“Truthfully, I never fully recovered,” reflects Stallone, now 77, during an interview for “Sly.”

“It had a profound impact on my body, and I have never been the same since. Never,” he adds.

Looking back on the incident nearly 14 years later, Stallone questions whether it was worth it.

“Was I doing it solely for validation? It’s almost like a child seeking approval from their father. It’s a constant need for encouragement. But it’s true,” he confesses.

Stallone’s former rival turned friend, Arnold Schwarzenegger, who co-starred with him in “The Expendables,” also reflects on the accident.

“While it’s not uncommon for action heroes to get injured on set, Sly took it to the extreme. I thought it was too much,” Schwarzenegger shares.

The news of Stallone’s injury was kept under wraps until after filming had wrapped up, and the actor had started promoting the movie in 2010.

Stallone recounts to FHM magazine, “We had seven guys just kicking each other’s asses, each one tougher than the next. Our stunt guys were literally begging for mercy,” as reported by The Guardian.

“During my fight with Stone Cold Steve Austin, it got so intense that I ended up with a hairline fracture in my neck. I’m not kidding,” he further reveals.

“I haven’t shared this with anyone, but I had to undergo a major operation after. I now have a metal plate in my neck,” Stallone discloses.

In the first three “Expendables” films, Stallone’s character, Barney Ross, played a central role, but his screen time was significantly reduced in the fourth film “Expend4bles,” released this summer, as he officially walked away from the franchise with a $20 million payday in March 2017.
