Swiss Alps reveal the long-awaited discovery of missing British climber from 52 years ago

The Swiss Alps have revealed another long-lost climber, with the remains of a British mountaineer who went missing over five decades ago being identified. As global warming causes the glaciers in the Alps to melt and recede, more and more remains of missing climbers are being discovered. The climber in question was reported missing in 1971, but despite search efforts at the time, nothing was found. However, on August 22, 2022, fellow climbers stumbled upon human remains on the Chessjengletscher glacier near Saas-Fee, a village in the Saas Valley.

It took a year to identify the climber, with experts meticulously reviewing the case files of missing climbers. Eventually, thanks to the collaboration of Interpol Manchester and Scottish police, a relative was located and a DNA sample provided, resulting in the formal identification on August 30.

This discovery is part of a growing trend of finding the remains of hikers, climbers, and skiers who disappeared decades ago as the glaciers in the Alps melt due to global warming. In late July, the remains of a German climber missing since 1986 were found on another Swiss glacier. Similarly, in August 2017, a mountain guide discovered the remains of a man who died in an accident on an Austrian glacier 22 years earlier. Italian mountain rescue crews also uncovered the remains of hikers from the 1980s or 1990s on a glacier on Mont Blanc’s southern face in August 2015. Additionally, in 2015, two Japanese climbers who went missing on the Matterhorn in 1970 were found and confirmed through DNA testing.

The melting glaciers are not only revealing the tragic fate of these individuals but also highlighting the pressing issue of climate change. As more and more remains are discovered, it serves as a stark reminder of the impact global warming is having on our environment. It is imperative that we take action to protect our planet and combat climate change.
