Swimmers Now Rejoice as the Seine Breaks Free from a Century of Taboo

In 1884, Georges Seurat captured a vivid scene in his painting “Bathers at Asnieres,” depicting people enjoying the waters of the Seine. At that time, swimming in the river was a common activity for the French. However, less than 30 years later, the practice was prohibited. Despite the ban, some brave individuals have been defying the rules and swimming in the Seine. Now, the general public will have the opportunity to relive the 19th century experience. The Seine is set to open for swimming again in two years’ time, according to a report by The Guardian.

Paris is preparing to host the Summer Games next year, and several Olympic and Paralympic events will take place in the Seine’s waters. However, by 2025, the city plans to open three designated swimming areas for everyday recreation. These areas will be located in central Paris near Ile Saint-Louis island, as well as on the eastern and western ends of the city. Lifeguards will be present at each swim area, and facilities will be provided for swimmers to change, shower, and store their belongings safely, as per a statement from City Hall.

The decision to ban swimming in the Seine was made in 1923 due to water pollution caused by sewage overflow during heavy rains. The local authorities have initiated a $1.6 billion cleanup project, including the construction of a reservoir to hold the overflow, in hopes of improving the water quality. However, there is also a concern about rats along the riverbanks. A water quality official from the city has assured that measures will be taken to eliminate any rodents found in the water, as reported by the BBC.
