Suspect in custody after stabbing incident leaves professor and two students injured at Canadian university

June 28 (UPI) — A stabbing incident occurred on the main campus of the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada, resulting in a professor and two students being hospitalized. The suspect has been apprehended by the police.

The University of Waterloo, located in the city of Waterloo, is home to approximately 121,400 residents and is situated about 70 miles west of Toronto.

Cherri Greeno, the director of corporate affairs for the Waterloo Regional Police Service, confirmed that although the victims sustained serious injuries, their lives are not in danger.

The police were summoned to the Hagey Hall of the Humanities on the main campus at approximately 3:30 p.m., where the stabbing took place. The suspect was swiftly apprehended within the same building.

The authorities have established that the suspect, who is said to be a member of the university community, entered an ongoing gender studies philosophy class and attacked the professor and two students.

Greeno stated that the motive behind the incident is currently under investigation.

When asked about any possible connection between the subject of the class and the violence, Greeno stated that all possibilities are being examined.

“At present, we don’t have that information. However, we hope to uncover the motive through our questioning. This stabbing incident appears to be an isolated event within the university,” Greeno said.

As of now, no charges have been filed against the suspect.

The university released a statement confirming that the police have cleared Hagey Hall, which will remain closed on Thursday morning as the investigation continues.

The university has made after-hours mental health support available to the students affected by the violence and tweeted about it.

Earlier, the university instructed everyone present in Hagey Hall to vacate the premises immediately while keeping all doors open. Despite the cancellation of Wednesday night’s classes in Hagey Hall, all other campus operations are proceeding as usual.

“There is no further threat to our campus community. We will continue to assist the WRPS in their investigation,” the university statement read.
