In a heartwarming incident from the jungles of southern Colombia, four children who went missing in a plane crash on May 1 have been rescued after spending 40 days in the jungle. The children – Tien Ranoque Mucutuy (4), Soleiny Jacobombaire Mucutuy (9), Lesly Jacobombaire Mucutuy (13), and Cristin Ranoque Mucutuy (1) – became stranded when the airplane crashed, and three adults, including the children’s mother Magdalena Mucutuy Valencia, died in the accident. Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced the rescue on Twitter, praising the children’s total survival that would be remembered in history. The Colombian military deployed special forces soldiers and indigenous scouts to track them down and discovered diapers, footprints and a bottle during their search. After being examined by medical personnel, the children were flown to Bogota and will be treated at a military hospital in the capital, according to Colombian Defense Minister Ivan Valasquez. The children’s indigenous knowledge helped them survive the ordeal, and they are now hailed as “children of the jungle and Colombia.”
