Surprising Zoom Appearance: Tom Cruise Supports Striking Actors

The Hollywood actors’ strike has gained the support of one of its most prominent A-listers, Tom Cruise. The star of “Top Gun: Maverick” surprised everyone by joining a negotiation session between the actors’ union (SAG-AFTRA) and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) via Zoom. This move comes as actors and entertainers in Hollywood, alongside the Writers Guild of America (WGA), are striking for the first time in over sixty years, standing up against the increasing influence of artificial intelligence (AI) in the industry. Tom Cruise passionately urged the AMPTP to reconsider its position on AI in TV and film streaming, causing several high-profile projects, including his own “Mission: Impossible” movie, the “Avatar” sequel, “Gladiator 2”, and “Deadpool 3”, to come to a halt.

During the Zoom call, Cruise also addressed the guild’s stance on stunt actors. He pleaded with the AMPTP to allow performers to continue their press tours after the strike, considering the delicate state of movie theaters post-pandemic. Cruise stressed that promoting films is equally crucial for actors and studios. As a result of the strike, the union protecting Hollywood’s biggest stars has united with screenwriters on the picket lines. This joint effort may lead to a decline in shows and movies in the near future. It is worth noting that the SAG-AFTRA’s decision to halt work comes after failed negotiations with the AMPTP, which represents streaming giants such as Disney, Netflix, Amazon, and others. This strike marks the first time in over four decades that the 160,000-strong SAG-AFTRA has walked off film and TV jobs. The demands from both SAG-AFTRA and the WGA revolve around seeking higher pay and residuals in the streaming era.
