Surprising Twist: Canadian Man Misidentified as American After Controversial Rant During Unforgettable European Journey

  • Billy Love received strong backlash after posting a video criticizing his European trip.
  • Initial commenters mistakenly assumed he was American and criticized him for being the reason outsiders “hate American people.”
  • Love, who is actually Canadian, expressed surprise at the extent of the backlash.

A Canadian man is facing backlash from non-Americans on TikTok after sharing a video about his disappointing Europe trip. Many angry commenters mistook him for an American and blamed him for the negative perception of American people.

Billy Love, the creator of the video, acknowledged the backlash but did not anticipate its magnitude. He told Insider that the incident has shown him the “deep-rooted hatred” Europeans have toward Americans.

In the video posted on September 14, which has garnered over 1.4 million views, Love described his trip to Europe in early September as a mixture of amazing experiences and disappointing moments.

@billylovebaby Replying to @jake This is a 100% honest take on my eurotrip. Overall I enjoyed it a lot because I was experiencing some amazing things with some of the closest people in my life, but if I could go back I would do things differently. Also keep in mind, this is just my opinion based off of my experience. I forgot to mention that I was in Athens for one night as a layover and the acropolis was gorgeous. #europe #eurotrip #travelstories ♬ original sound – Billy Love

“People love to glamorize Europe because of its stunning beauty, but there are also many negative aspects,” Love stated. He expressed his dissatisfaction with the Greek islands of Ios and Crete, where he felt that the locals were condescending and treated him poorly. He also mentioned that he wouldn’t revisit Berlin due to his dislike of the city’s culture.

While Love praised Budapest and Prague, he criticized their nightlife scenes for being outdated. In the end, Amsterdam was the only city he genuinely enjoyed.

The comment section of the video is filled with mockery and sarcastic remarks about Love’s supposedly “positive and uplifting personality” during his trip. Although Love never revealed his nationality in the video, many viewers immediately assumed he was American. Some viewers pointed out that he celebrated Amsterdam but only recommended visiting the city’s Red Light District.

A top comment, receiving over 33,000 likes, read, “We hate American people in general because you think you are better than the rest of the world,” followed by “f America.”

Another comment stated, “This video exemplifies why Europeans dislike Americans. You think everyone cares about your opinion, but in reality, nobody does.”

A snarky response said, “Please don’t think you need to come back. We won’t mind.”

While most people were surprised by Love’s negative experiences in Europe, some comments turned personal and derogatory, attacking his appearance. In response, Love posted a follow-up TikTok addressing the criticisms and showcasing his dedication to fitness.

“How long until they realize I’m Canadian and built like an action figure…” he wrote in the video’s description.

Love acknowledged that he should have researched the cities he visited more thoroughly. He initially traveled to Europe with a one-way ticket, aiming to experience different cultures spontaneously.

However, Love expressed shock at the “deep-rooted hatred” some Europeans have for Americans. He speculates that Europeans may dislike American tourists because of stereotypes of Americans being loud, arrogant, and disrespectful towards other cultures. He also suggests that envy or jealousy towards America may contribute to the negative sentiment.

“As a Canadian, I just want everyone to calm down and let’s enjoy ourselves. Anywhere but Berlin though,” Love concluded.
